Text 1. You are going to read an extract from a novel. For questions 1 – 8, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text.

I shifted uncomfortably inside my best suit and eased a finger inside the tight white collar. It was hot in the little bus and I had taken a seat on the wrong side where the summer sun beat on the windows. It was a strange outfit for the weather, but a few miles ahead my future employer might be waiting for me and I had to make a good
impression.
There was a lot depending on this interview. Many friends who had qualified with me were unemployed or working in shops or as labourers in the shipyards. So many that I had almost given up hope of any future for myself as a veterinary surgeon. There were usually two or three jobs advertised in the Veterinary Record each week and an average of eighty applicants for each one. It hadn’t seemed possible when the letter came from Darrowby in Yorkshire. Mr S. Farnon would like to see me on the Friday afternoon; I was to come to tea and, if we were suited to each other, I could stay on as his assistant. Most young people emerging from the colleges after five years of
hard work were faced by a world unimpressed by their enthusiasm and bursting line 15 knowledge. So I had grabbed the lifeline unbelievingly.
The driver crashed his gears again as we went into another steep bend. We had been climbing steadily now for the last fifteen miles or so, moving closer to the distant blue of the Pennine Hills. I had never been in Yorkshire before, but the name had always raised a picture of a region as heavy and unromantic as the pudding of the same name; I was prepared for solid respectability, dullness and a total lack of charm. But as the bus made its way higher, I began to wonder. There were high grassy hills and wide valleys. In the valley bottoms, rivers twisted among the trees and solid grey stone farmhouses lay among islands of cultivated land which pushed up the wild, dark hillsides.
Suddenly, I realised the bus was clattering along a narrow street which opened onto a square where we stopped. Above the window of a small grocer’s shop I read ‘Darrowby Co-operative Society’. We had arrived. I got out and stood beside my battered suitcase, looking about me. There was something unusual and I didn’t know what it was at first. Then it came to me. The other passengers had dispersed, the driver had switched off the engine and there was not a sound or a movement anywhere. The only visible sign of life was a group of old men sitting round the clock tower in the centre of the square, but they might have been carved of stone.
Darrowby didn’t get much space in the guidebooks, but where it was mentioned it was described as a grey little town on the River Arrow with a market place and little of interest except its two ancient bridges. But when you looked at it, its setting was beautiful. Everywhere from the windows of houses in Darrowby you could see the hills. There was a clearness in the air, a sense of space and airiness that made me feel I had left something behind. The pressure of the city, the noise, the smoke – already they seemed to be falling away from me. Trengate Street was a quiet road leading off the square and from there I had my first sight of Skeldale House. I knew it was the right place before I was near enough to read S. Farnon, Veterinary Surgeon on the old-fashioned brass nameplate. I knew by the ivy which grew untidily over the red brick, climbing up to the topmost windows. It was what the letter had said – the only house with ivy; and this could be where I would work for the first time as a veterinary surgeon. I rang the doorbell.

Making the Most of Your College Applications By Melissa Algranati and Jennifer Gioia You can't believe that after 12 years of education your future depends on what pearls of genius you can cram onto a handful of pages – or that complete strangers will sit in a room and determine if you will be "worthy" of attending their institution. This can be a stressful time. Below are real questions answered by real college admissions professionals in the United States. 0 _____A_____ Really concentrate on your extra-curricular resume and essay. These are the two areas that will make you noticed. Take time to think about why you are involved in the activities that you are doing. What do they mean to you? How have they shaped you? How might they be of value to the university or college you will be attending? 1__________ Absolutely! A number of colleges and universities give scholarships and awards to those who have been involved in leadership or community service projects. Include your involvement in extracurricular activities, and make sure to highlight any honors or awards you have received. You can also include it in your college essay, and talk about the skills you learned and opportunities you had. 2 __________ It often depends on the school. Big universities and state schools get thousands and thousands of applicants each year, so they tend to focus on your grade average, scores, and class ranking. Smaller universities and colleges will have more time to focus on things like the essay, recommendations, and extracurricular activities. 3 __________ Think about who knows you best. Who can talk about your academic achievements and aspirations, as well as your character and qualities? Most students ask teachers, club advisors, coaches, and mentors. To get the best letters possible, make sure you identify people who are supportive of you. When you ask them, let them know where you are applying and why. The goal is to choose someone who will stress the strengths you have already highlighted, or provide an opportunity to add something new about you that the admissions officer does not yet know. 4 __________ It definitely has an impact. You should always pay attention to your grades, especially those in your junior year of high school. But don't fret. What universities look for most is an upward trend, someone who is constantly getting better and improving. If there is an unexpected event that caused your grades to drop, that will also be taken into consideration. And, if you have only done well in a particular subject, you can highlight that strength, stressing that you will use college as a way to really hone in and excel at your strengths and your passions. 5 __________ Each university and college has a specific application fee, which can be found on the school's website. A lot of times fee waivers are available. Check with your guidance counselor. In addition, some schools will waive the fee if the student comes to visit the campus and takes a tour or completes the school's online application.
A How do I create a power-packed application that stands out from all the other applications?
B My grades haven't been consistent throughout high school. Is that a problem?
C What do colleges look for most? Grades, extracurricular activities, volunteerism, or something else?
D Where can I note any special needs or disability on my application?
E How much do I have to pay for my study once if I am enrolled?
F Lots of the colleges I am applying to ask for recommendations. Who should I ask?
G How much do application fees cost? What if I can't afford to pay them?
H Is my out-of-school activity something noteworthy to put down on the paperwork?

Sing Jingle bells!

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
They make our spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight,

O Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride,
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Mis fortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank,
And we, we got upset.
Jingle bells….

Now the ground is white
So go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
Two-forty as his speed
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead,

Jingle bells…

Carol of the bels

This year we celebrate 100 year anniversory of a famous Ukrainian song Shchedryk which became the Christmas hit all over the world!
http://videochart.net/video/4y109.3923954501e1bec066721b3ff8f4
Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say
throw cares away.
Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,
Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all carolling.
One seems to hear
words of good cheer
from everywhere
filling the air.
Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o’er hill and dale,
telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send,
on without end,
their joyful tone
to every home
Ding dong ding… dong!

Christmas carols

Christmas Day, December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends give each other presents. So, before Christmas all the department stores and shops are crowded, everybody is choosing a present. In general, people get prepared for this holiday very carefully. They decorate their houses in the traditional way. Christmas trees are set up in houses, in the streets and churches. They are always decorated with fairy lights, angels and small toys. In addition, little packets with nuts, candies and special biscuits are hung on the tree. Presents are put around the tree and artificial «frost» is scattered over the branches. The Germans are believed to be the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations and Martin Luther was the first to place a star on the top of the tree. This star represents the star appeared over the stable in which Christ was born.In Great Britain, the Christmas tree became popular while Queen Victoria ruled the country.Besides the Christmas tree, holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the house. Branches of holly are put up behind pictures and mistletoe is hung over doors, so the young people have a chance to kiss the girls under it, plucking each time a red berry from the mistletoe. It is said that the girl who was not kissed under it at Christmas would not get married that year.On the eve of Christmas children hang their stockings, so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn't behave properly Santa Claus can put there a piece of coal as punishment.
Santa Claus got his name from a man known as St. Nicolas, who lived in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died, the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name Sinter Klaus became Santa Claus.Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. No church or school is without its carol service. Carols may be traditional or with some variations that express different feelings. Carols were used for the first time during Christmas in the fifteenth century.Usually children come around in the evening to the front doors and start singing carols and people who live in these houses give children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing.A typical Christmas lunch includes turkey with cranberry sauce and pudding. Every young woman in each household helps to stir the Christmas pudding, if she wishes to be married that year. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to see who finds it.After the lunch they go to the sitting room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV.So, Christmas is a merry family holiday for all the people of Great Britain. Christmas comes but once a year.

Render the text making a short summary of it.
Don't forget to use the Passive  Voice and the clauses of concession!

Endangered animals in Ukraine.

Endangered species in Ukraine

  1. 1. Endangered Species in Ukraine
  2. 2. Wolf  They are distributed almost continuously over the Carpathian Mountains and their population densities are very high compared to other parts in Europe. After World War II, wolves were present in all forested parts of Romania and numbered over 4,000 animals..
  3. 3. great bustard  The great bustard (Otis tarda) is in the bustard family, the only member of the genus Otis. It breeds in southern and central Europe, where it is the largest species of bird, and across temperate Asia. European populations are mainly resident, but Asian birds move further south in winter. Portugal and Spain now contain about 60% of the world's population.
  4. 4. Tarpan  The Tarpan (Equus ferus ferus), also known as Eurasian wild horse, is an extinct subspecies of wild horse. The last individual believed to be of this subspecies died in captivity in Ukraine in 1909, although some sources claim that it was not a genuine wild horse due to its resemblance to domesticated horses.
  5. 5. Black stork  In Ukraine, the number reaches 400-450 pairs.  In particular, in the Volyn region of 50-60 pairs,  Rivne - 60-70,  Lviv - 30-40,  Transcarpathia - 30-40,  Ivano-Frankivsk - 30-40,  Chernovtsy - 8-10,  Kiev - 25-30,  Chernihiv - 40-50,  Sumy - 10-12.
  6. 6. Brown bear  Brown bear is listed in the IUCN Red List as "a species that is at risk» («Endangered»)  In Ukraine, the brown bear is found in the Carpathians, where, according to the staff of CBR, the fall of 2005, there were about 200 animals.

New species of the Red Data Book of Ukraine

August 13th, 2009
It is done. Recently it was approved a list of animals species which will be included in a new (third) edition of the Red Data Book of Ukraine. The list was long-expecting as according to the latest information this autumn the Red Data Book itself is planned to be printed.
Thus, the new list was approved by the order of Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukrain No 313 of 17.06.2009 “About approval of lists of animal species which are included in the Red Data Book of Ukriane (animal world) and animal species which are excluded from the Red Data Book of Ukraine (animal world)”, registered in Ministry of Justice of Ukraine with No 627/16643 of 13 July 2009.
In general, numbers of species in the Red Data Book increased from 67 (in the second edition) to 86 (in the third edition). At this no one species was excluyded comparing with the previous edition. As for birds of prey their number was added by 4 species. They are Black Kite, Montagu’s Harrier, Short-eared Owl and Scops Owl.
I have to disappoint future readers of the Red Data Book of Ukraine. Similar to previous editions there will be only one page dedicated for each species so it will be rather short information.
Below there is the list of animals which are to be included to the Red Data Book of Ukraine (Falconiformes and Owls):

Render the text. Ecology in Vinnytsia region.

Snake Vs Crocodile

A snake in northern Queensland, Australia, has won its battle with a local crocodile. It fought the crocodile for several hours, before finally killing and eating it.
The fight, which took place at Lake Moondarra, was filmed by local residents. Tiffany Corlis, who saw the fight, said: “It was amazing. We saw the snake fighting with the crocodile. It used its body to hold the crocodile and stop its legs from moving.”
“After the crocodile was dead, the snake dragged it onto land, and started to eat it, face-first.” It took the snake around 15 minutes to eat the crocodile. After, the shape of the crocodile could be seen inside the snake’s body.
“The snake was definitely very full,” said Ms Corlis. “I don’t know where it went after that. We all left – we didn’t want to stick around too long!”
The snake is thought to be a python, which kills its prey by tightening its body around an animal every time it breathes out. If the animal cannot escape from the python, it will eventually suffocate and die. Pythons, like many snakes, have very flexible jaws, which allow them to swallow prey whole, without chewing.
Can you find words in the text with these meanings?
